Required Inspections for Portable Fire Extinguishers

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) details requirements for portable fire extinguishers in NFPA10.  All fire extinguishers are required to be inspected each month, which can be done internally or by an HRSS licensed professional.  During the monthly inspection, the fire extinguisher should be evaluated visually to ensure that the unit is clean, the pull pin is in place, and the pressure gauge is not disturbed.  HRSS will provide the proper documentation by completing the tag requirements on your extinguishers. 

Annual inspections are required by a licensed fire protection company, and also includes visual inspections and documentation.  

Internal maintenance is required of your fire extinguishers at 6 years from the manufacture date, with hydrostatic testing required 12 years after manufacture date.
