Integrated Alarm Systems by Fire and Safety Specialists

Integrated alarm systems are fire and safety systems that are monitored with one access control, combining fire, smoke and physical security into one comprehensive life and safety system.  An integrated alarm system includes fire, smoke or gas detection, evacuation notifications and emergency lock-downs which can be monitored and dispatched from one central on-site location or even from an off-site remote location.
Remote locking of all doors during an exterior threat, closed circuit video and motion sensors, even remote elevator control are all beneficial features of integrated alarm systems.  These early warnings, audio announcements, and remote lock-down or evacuations save lives.  Why waste time installing separate systems when you can have a fire alarm system combined with physical safety features for complete protection of your building and occupants.

Fire Alarm Systems for Commercial Buildings

Fire alarm systems for commercial buildings must meet guidelines enforced by the authorities in your jurisdiction which includes guidelines established by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the International Building Code (IBC), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) legislation.  The fire marshal in your state is often the authority with jurisdiction, having fire inspectors work on their behalf.
If you are a building owner or electrical contractor trying to establish which codes and regulations to abide by, you can contact your state fire marshal for direction or simply contact a fire and safety system expert in your area.
Commercial Building Owners Have Responsibility
Building owners have a responsibility to all occupants that either reside, work or frequent their facility, safeguarding them from hazards associated with the type of structure and business conducted on the premises.
For example, restaurants need to meet additional guidelines for fire detection and suppression in the kitchen, manufacturers are required to install the correct fire alarm system in their commercial building depending on the products used, and hospitals and campuses must adhere to strict regulation for detection, alarms and evacuation procedures.
Your fire and safety system expert on commercial building requirements will be able to answer all your questions for your unique structure based on building design, and activities conducted on the premises.  An experienced and knowledgeable fire and safety consulting firm will know all required regulations applying to your building and even assist in gaining permit approval for your AHJ.
Fire Alarm System Design for Commercial Buildings
Whether your structure is a simple low-rise building, a high-rise structure or a complex such as campuses and hospitals, your fire alarm system must begin with a thorough comprehensive design covering all aspects of fire and safety.  NFPA101 is the Life Safety Code that most jurisdictions require adherence to, with specific guidelines established for commercial buildings.
Features of a comprehensive design include one or two-way communication, capability to recall elevators, early warning detection sensors, emergency unlocking of doors for evacuation, and heat or water flow detection.

What You Need to Know for 15 Lb. CO2 Fire Extinguishers

As a 15 lb. CO2 fire extinguisher is the most common carbon dioxide portable fire extinguisher used, you should know how to use one and in what type of fire situation a CO2 extinguisher is applicable.  A carbon Dioxide fire extinguisher works by emitting a very cold discharge that puts out a fire by removing heat and also by removing the element of oxygen from the fire triangle.

Types of Fires for CO2 Fire Extinguishers

A CO2 fire extinguisher will only be effective on Class B and Class C fires, they will typically be ineffective for Class A fires.  You should never try to use a CO2 fire extinguisher on a Class A fire, which is a fire that is caused from ordinary combustible material like paper, wood or plastics.

A fire is classified as a Class B fire if it originates from flammable liquids which would be petroleum oil, gasoline, and paint, or from flammable gases which include butane and propane.  (Cooking oils and grease are not included in Class B fire descriptions, these types of fires are designated as Class K fires, and would be common in restaurants).

Class C fires are caused from energized electrical equipment which would be appliances, transformers and motors.  Without the power, the Class C fire becomes another class of fire.

NFPA 10 covers the requirements for all portable fire extinguishers, while NFPA12 details the guidelines on portable carbon dioxide equipment.  For guidelines on using carbon dioxide as an inerting agent see NFPA 69.

Inerting is the process of minimizing the level and amount of oxygen in a defined space, or preventing oxygen or moisture from contacting with absorptive or reactive products. Carbon dioxide is used for this purpose occasion, but the gas most commonly used for inerting is Nitrogen.

NFPA 10 covers only the minimum requirements and necessary essential guidelines for proper performance from those trained on the use of a portable a CO2 fire extinguisher.
