How Honeywell Life Safety Systems Benefit Your Industry Sector

Honeywell is the most recognized name among fire alarm manufacturers with fire and life safety systems installed worldwide across many industry sectors.  Hospitals, college campuses, sports arenas, high-rise hotels, and various commercial properties rely upon Notifier® by Honeywell to protect their greatest assets, people and property.

Honeywell fire and emergency communication systems deliver reliable detection and communication with early warning, providing critical time to react in emergency situations. Notifier® delivers what other life safety systems can’t with:

  • Integrated Emergency Communications - connecting multiple buildings across a campus or multiple floors of high-rise structures with integrated systems for early warning

  • Geographically Dispersed – connect campuses and even multiple sites locally or globally

  • Mobile Monitoring – monitor, diagnose and manage your system on the go from anywhere at any moment

  • Meet Challenging Environments - meet the demands of challenging environments with advanced technologies

Honeywell life safety systems provide these benefits and many more to a wide range of industry sectors. Notifier® by Honeywell offers flexible and expandable life safety systems proven in many case studies.

Hospital Case Study

EXPANSION: A hospital located in a big city had grown steadily for several years and underwent major capital improvements with the addition of a six-story Pavilion containing 24 operating rooms, several patient care suites, a pharmacy and a food court.

CHALLENGE: The challenge was to ensure the continual safety of the patients and staff while overhauling the existing Notifier fire alarm system.  This included expanding into new structures and networking across a 600,000 square-foot campus with multiple buildings.  It was critical to maintain existing data and functionality while considering the time and cost of installation.

SOLUTION: a Notifier fire safety system was selected for advanced functionalities and the capability to upgrade older technologies seamlessly.  A Digital Voice Command (DVC) system was implemented for customized, campus wide notification. Networkable ONYX® Series NFS2-3030 fire alarm control panels replaced existing panels.

RESULTS: this Notifier® by Honeywell life safety system provided many benefits with seamless conversion to new fire alarm control panels without any data loss. The life safety and emergency communications system was upgraded and expanded across all existing and new structures. Voice commands were customized for targeted structures.

This was the ideal solution for a multi-structure, complex campus and still provides flexibility and scalability for future expansions.

NFPA 1 Details the Requirements for Automatic Sprinklers

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) details in NFPA 1, Fire Code, the requirements to have automatic sprinkler protection in buildings and structures. NFPA 1 references over 130 NFPA standards such as NFPA 101, NFPA 72 and many others. NFPA 1 requires automatic sprinkler protection in all new buildings which house emergency rescue, ambulance and fire services.

Section 13.3.2 of NFPA 1, Fire Code requirements includes the standards for emergency service buildings as well as other buildings and structures making it a great place to start when you have questions about sprinkler requirements for your building. Automatic sprinkler systems are required to be installed according to section 13.3.1 and compliant to NFPA 13.

NFPA 1 also requires automatic sprinklers to be installed in the following instances:

  • New buildings which house emergency ambulance, rescue or fire services (13.3.2.3)
  • Basements which exceed 2500 ft2 (232 m2) in new buildings. (13.3.2.2)
  • New buildings which are three or more stories above grade (13.3.2.4)
    • Open parking structures which are detached from other occupancies are not required to have automatic sprinkler protection. (13.3.2.5)
The requirements for automatic sprinkler protection are also detailed in additional NFPA codes such as NFPA 13 and NFPA 101.
  • Standards regarding exterior roofs, decks, balconies and other projections are detailed in Section 13.3.2.6, NFPA 13
  • Standards for addressing sprinkler requirements based on occupancy for new and existing buildings are contained in Section 13.3.2.7, NFPA 101, Life Safety Code
  • All new high-rise structures must be protected by automatic sprinklers as mandated in Section 13.3.2.26
Additional requirements exist such as detailed in Section 13.3.2.27 which requires all areas used for storage of combustibles which is high piled and greater than 2500 ft.² to be protected with automatic sprinkler systems. General storage of combustibles in areas greater than 12,000 ft.² must also be protected with an automatic sprinkler system, as well as areas of storage for group a plastics in excess of 5 feet high over a 2500 ft.² area.

As you can see, there are many instances where automatic sprinkler systems are required and various areas in NFPA codes and standards which detail those requirements.  It is always best to check with fire and life safety system professionals to ensure code compliance as it relates to your building and occupancy. Remember to check Section 13.3.2 of NFPA 1, Fire Code, as a good reference point to begin your research or contact the fire alarm code compliance specialists at High Rise Security Systems.

HRSS offers fire alarm system consulting which goes above and beyond code compliance to ensure your total safety and protection. How Photoelectric Smoke Detectors Save Lives

Photoelectric smoke detectors work differently than the standard ionization smoke detectors and provide an earlier warning of smoldering fires. In fact, ionization smoke alarms typically respond 15 to 50 minutes slower than photoelectric smoke alarms in smoldering fires.  Some experts compare this lapse in warning to an airbag inflating 15 minutes after an accident, by then it is too late.

Considering that the majority of fatalities from residential fires occur due to smoke inhalation rather than flames and that approximately two thirds of all fire fatalities occur at night while people are sleeping, the difference between photoelectric and ionization smoke detectors can be a matter of life and death.

Ionization smoke detectors respond approximately 30–90 seconds quicker than photoelectric detectors for “fast flame” fires only.  Several studies also reveal, however, that ionization smoke alarms failed to activate at all in 20 to 25% of fires. It is recommended to utilize each type of smoke detection technology for the best protection against fast flame and smoldering fires.

How Does a Photoelectric Smoke Detector Work?

Photoelectric smoke detectors provide the earliest warning of smoldering fires by detecting even the slightest wisp of smoke in the air. They utilize a sensitive instrument called a photoelectric cell which projects a focused beam of continuous light onto a mirror. If a wisp of smoke enters the chamber, a slight refraction of light occurs which sounds the alarm. Photoelectric smoke alarms can detect a fire before the appearance of flames.

Early notification of smoke and fire is critical in residential and commercial settings. Photoelectric smoke detection technology has been proven to save lives by providing the earliest warning at the beginning stages of a fire.
